Palm Springs Police and The Ranch Partner to Address Theft Through Holistic Approach

The Ranch Recovery Centers, Inc. (The Ranch) is collaborating with the Palm Springs Police Department (PSPD) on utilizing a $4.7 million grant from the Board of State and Community Corrections (BSCC) aimed at reducing retail and auto theft in the community. By combining law enforcement efforts with therapeutic support, this program seeks to provide offenders with a second chance while reducing theft-related crimes in the Palm Springs community.

Starting in January, PSPD will use the funding to identify repeat offenders who have been arrested for theft at least twice. Through a grassroots, community policing approach, officers will offer these individuals an opportunity to participate in a holistic recovery program provided through The Ranch. This program includes substance abuse treatment, mental health therapy, and education in essential life skills.

“Many crimes are rooted in mental health challenges and addiction,” said PSPD Chief Andy Mills. “In Palm Springs, we’re committed to finding long-term solutions that promote a safer community. By addressing the underlying causes of theft and related crimes, our partnership with The Ranch represents a meaningful step forward in tackling issues like substance abuse and homelessness.”

The voluntary program, funded by the state, requires participants to sign a contract agreeing to complete 45 days of substance abuse treatment. PSPD plans to implement this strategy over the next six months and then evaluate its effectiveness.

After being awarded the state grant, PSPD issued a request for proposals from local substance abuse treatment centers. The Ranch, a nonprofit organization based in Desert Hot Springs, was selected as the official partner. The Ranch has a 53-year track record and a professional staff that utilizes an evidenced-based holistic approach to help people and their families through a comprehensive recovery program.

“We are honored to collaborate with PSPD on this initiative,” said Rick Mesa, President and CEO of The Ranch Recovery Centers, Inc. “This partnership aligns with our mission to support individuals and their families as they begin their journey to recovery from the devastating effects of alcoholism and drug dependency.”
